Mexican American War

Mexican American War

How would you feel if someone walked in your house and just kicked you out of it? Well that is just what we are doing to Mexican settlers in California and New Mexico, if we go to war with them. I have some persuasive reasons why we shouldn’t. My first reason is that I don’t think Mexico is ready for war. They have just gained their independence from Spain; they are still in the process of setting up their nation financially, and Mexico barely has a military. My second reason is we are trying to take something that does not belong to us, which are California and New Mexico. Spanish conquistadors settled there in the 1500s, and that’s way before we started manifest destiny*. Mexico won California and New Mexico from Spain in 1821, so that means that land has been theirs for more than 300 years. My third reason is we should not go to war with Mexico. Our people might die of disease and battle, millions of dollars will be spent on war equipment, and we will have to pay for the clean-up after the war. My fourth reason is we are trying to bully Mexico. We are going to war with Mexico because they did not want to sell New Mexico and California to us. We also see that Mexico has *a very unstable government and we are trying to take advantage of that. If we win this war we will be taking half of Mexico’s land, the half that kept that nation alive. My last reason is it is unjust to go to war with Mexico. They will lose their provinces, they will lose all trade they get from the Pacific Ocean, and most Mexican people will lose their homes. So, take a second and put yourselves in the Mexican’s position.
