Mexican Americans. Did you know that Mexican Americans make up about two/thirds of the Hispanic American people and they are supposed to increase to over double its size in the next 40 years? Mexican Americans mainly live in the southwest United States. Over 60% of the population lives in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorade and Texas. This population is in great discrimination by many people in the region that they may live in. The history of Mexican Americans is wide ranging depending on the region and when you want to begin. Mexican Americans use to be living in the states that belonged to Mexico, now known as California, Colorado, New Mexico Arizona and Texas. The southern part of the United states use to belong to the Mexican people untillthe Mexican American war in 1846 and ending in 1848 with an American victory. America took over what we now call texas. The Mexicans that still lived in this area are called Tejanos. At this time they lost all of their land and political rights. They were placed at the bottom of the society. They were forced to work as cheap laborers but it was better than no pay. Other Mexican began to come to the United States for this cheap labor. They began creating communities in steel producing cities such as Los Angeles, Santa Ana, Denver, San Francisco and Chicago. They obtained meat packing, agriculture, construction, landscaping, hotel, restaurant and other industrial jobs. They have stayed working in the United States since then and have made their way up in society since then. They have stood for economical edvancement such as voting rights. Still today these people of Mexican American culture face discrimination in many ways and every where they seem to go. Many Mexican Americans have not completed high school. At the age of 25 or older, only 3 out of 5 Mexican Americans have received a high school diploma. Only 35% of the Mexican American culture have an annual income of $35,000 or higher.
