1. Abstract
We, the consultants of Eco-manage, were assigned to assess the current vegetation state of Mr Pieters’ newly
purchased farm of 20ha which is situated within the Vredefort Dome, in the North-West Province. Within
the report we were asked to gather data on vegetation to advise Mr Pieters on the veld condition, what type
of land usage would be suitable, and whether he may keep either game or cattle. We did an assessment of the
veld condition and the woody components as well as a vegetation classification. The type of
phytosociological table used was the Braun-Blanquet which we used to construct a vegetation map of the
study area. By this assessment method the vegetation was ordered into a multimedia representation which
clearly stating the sub-communities within the assessed area. In conclusion we stated that Mr Pieters’ may
support 1-2 livestock units on the 20ha land owned. It is crucially important to manage this land well and
regular vegetation monitoring needs to take place, to ensure that the veld condition does not worsen.
Samevatting
