Theo’s conscience ultimately leads to his rise. In the part of the book called “The Oracle Priestess” Theo’s conscience pushes him to the limits and wants to leave all behind. Then, finding Florian and getting a real job really helps him to settle down. Finally, in the last chapter “The Garden of Cabbarus” his conscience and his willingness to be a good man takes control and he stops himself to kill Cabbarus, the man who was a devil and he hated him all his life.
Theo really struggles to be a man of integrity and have a clear conscience and to always do the right thing. He feels bad that he was the creator of this scheme called “The Oracle Priestess”. “He was ashamed of himself, appalled that his scheme had worked so well. He also had to admit that he was not entirely displeased.” (75 Alexander). He is struggling to be a man of integrity; however, he still has to do some soul searching. “For the rest, Theo expected, even hoped, the novelty of The Oracle Priestess would wear off. The Feldeners instead, crowed the salon each night in growing numbers. Las Bombas crowed over the receipts. Theo’s conscience smarted like a skinned knee”.(76) Theo was hoping that all of this will go away and he can have his conscience released, but it did not happened. He is also thinking of Anton and how he thought him to be vertical. ”Anton would not have been proud of him”(79). Despite his struggle to leave Mickle behind he takes the decision to leave Las Bombas.”There was no question in Theo’s mind. He had done the right and honorable thing. For the first time since taking up with Las Bombas, his conscience was at ease. And he felt miserable”(80). This reveals that Theo tries very hard to free his conscience by ignoring his feelings towards Mickle.
Once more, in part three Florian’s children, Theo tries to find some peace of mind. He struggles with his desire to be a good citizen by finding a real job, where he gets to help people instead of cheating them, and this makes...
