This paper gives an overview of the current health status of African Americans, how African Americans define health and the health disparities that exist for African Americans. It further compare and contrast the health care of African Americans compared to the rest of the population. How race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and education influence health for African Americans. Research has shown that there are health disparities in comparison of diverse communities to the rest of the population. There is clear distinction in health disparities among the African American (AA) community. African Americans have the highest rate of any health issues that arises. There are multidimensional reasons ranging from, insurance status, health status, education, income, racism, discrimination and some genetic factors. Even when some of these are controlled, health disparities are still present. African Americans distrust the health care systems; due to the way they have been unjustly treated, which have lead to their negative health outcomes. There is a historical racial disparity that has not been eradicated, which is part of the reason for this distrust. For example the Tuskegee syphilis experiment, were African Americans infected with syphilis where deceived and sacrificed to science. African Americans were refused the treatment and help they needed at the time. Effectively addressing these roadblocks is critical in dropping the mortality and morbidity rate from disease complications in the African American community.
