The Story of Morrie Schwartz
First, Morrie went through his childhood years. The day of December 20, 1916, Morrie Schwartz comes into this world. He was born to Charles Schwartz, who was a Russian immigrant who had moved to escape the Russian Army. Morrie grew up in the Jewish tenements in New York City. At the age of eight, he finds out that his mother has died. Not much long after, his brother David was diagnosed with Polio. Morrie’s father died from a heart attack not much long after being robbed. He died peacefully with his family and friends around him. Morrie went through a tough childhood, but he managed to make it through.
Next, Morriewent into his college years. He graduated from two different schools. The first graduation was from City College in New York. He earned his undergraduate from there. The second graduation was from the University of Chicago. He graduated with his master’s degree in 1946. Then, he graduated with his Ph.D. in 1951. He wrote three books on sociology in the 1950s and 1960s. He, then, went on as a renowned professor of sociology at Brandeis University. He was well respected and admired by his colleagues and students. Morrie was quite successful, went for his goals, and achieved them. Then, Morriegets a taste of some fame. Mitch Albom wrote a book all about Morrie’s story. Mitch sees Morrie on ABC’s Nightline discussing his illness with Ted Koppel. Albom and Schwartz’s last meeting was when Albom graduated from Brandeis, 16 years later Albom finally found his teacher. Schwartz and Albom collaborated on Tuesdays with Morrie during Schwartz’s final days in 1995. The book was published in 1997 and spent many years on the USA Today best-seller list. It was made into a TV movie in 1999. Ted Koppel’s last episode as Nightlinehost gave appreciations to Schwartz who died ten years earlier.
