Which of the theories we have discussed in lectures and workshops do you think helps you to make the most sense of how you find or lose motivation? There are many different motivation theories that help me understand why employees may lose or gain motivation. But in my opinion the two theories that I find most effective are firstly the ‘two factor theory’ written by Frederick Herzberg in 1959. The reason why this helps me understand how motivation works is that it clearly distinguishes the difference between satisfaction and dissatisfaction with the two factors ‘motivators’ and ‘hygiene factors’. For example in this theory Herzberg clearly states that just improving things such as salaries, security and status (hygiene factors) does not motivate the employee. It just makes the employee less dissatisfied with their job and it will not help to increase output. In order to increase output, according to Herzberg, managers need to give positive feedback to employees and encourage them to do the best they can. Therefore this shows the employee that they are being recognised for the work they do, thus increasing their motivation and output. The next theory that helps me understand how a person may find or lose motivation in a working place is Frederick Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The reason for this is because the hierarchy has five levels of human needs and a level must be fulfilled in order to move to the next level of the hierarchy. For example, a person who is dying of hunger and thirst will be motivated to achieve a basic wage in order to buy food and drink before worrying about having a secure job contract or the respect from others. The hierarchy begins with physiological level which is basically the normal needs of a human body such as food, drink, sleep, etc. Once this fulfilled the next level is safety, where the employee must feel financially and personally safe in order to move to the next level of needs, which is ‘social needs’. After ‘social needs’ is...
