Modern Times (1936) had such symbolism in the film that I feel is characteristic of the time back then, but as well as today (2010). The saying that “Time is Money” is highly portrayed, and how people must hurry all the time. So many people are in a hurry in society today. Deadlines need to be met or you just don’t get paid. Back then the factories were a big part of society and the livelihood of many blue-collard workers. Today we have the blue-collared work and the hustle and bustle, but on a different level. For example McDonalds Drive-thru. McDonalds during dinnertime has cars lined up, people in a hurry and the assembly of workers pushing fries out the window at the quickest time. In both scenarios there are workers and then there is a man in power. The job can become monotonous, tiring, mentally and physically draining. Employee’s may even become passive or develop psychological problems as portrayed in the movie. In both jobs the man in charge or woman in today’s time controls how the job is run. There is more fairness today but the higher the rank the more power, the more political it can be. We can also touch base on the economic downturn it portrayed during the depression, with factories closing and people out of work. Today we are also facing these same problems with the car manufacturers going belly up. This can cause a trickle down effect, which has put a significant amount of people out of work, protesting and scrounging for any kind of money to live. For some finding that money is legal and others this may lead them on a very slippery slope of illegal behavior. This leads me to another aspect in the movie that would be the many times Chaplin was thrown in jail. He was falsely accused of actions because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. In today’s society this can also happen. If you hang out with the wrong crowd or are associated in a certain social class you may find your self in that position. Trying to find work back...
