By definition, respect is a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements. Respect is the care and understanding of one human being for another, for example respect my family. Without respect we would not follow laws, and we would not have a civilized society where people are allowed life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I believe that respect is at the core of what it means to be a contributing member of the human race. Marine Corps standards are higher than any other service in our country, and I believe this is true, to the bottom of my heart. Respect is undermined all the time in the civilian world. Marines pride themselves on their uniqueness to the other services. One of these distinct differences is the respect given to senior marines and officers. Respect is very important for several reasons. The instant obedience to orders is a must. Learning to be professional not only assists in military operations, but is also a trait that can be taken to the civilian life. Whether you are military or a civilian, respect is a key trait that will make you or break you. There are several different aspects of respect in the world today. One is the respect for someone because of a billet or appointment over you. You must respect this person because they are your senior. Their actions determine the capabilities of a unit and their overall accomplishment of an operation. A senior marine is not just any person given a rank and job. Senior marines go through vigorous training to become the person they are. Through classes, training, and experiences they gain.
