Biotechnology Therapeutic Cloning Therapeutic Cloning involves taking cells from a patient and implanting them into a fertilized egg which has had its nucleus removed. The cell then divides forming a blastocyst. Stem cells are then extracted from the blastocyst and used to create tissue that is a genetic match to the patient. Therapeutic Cloning cancreate new tissue that can be given to the patient in place of tissue that has been damaged from heart disease, diabetes, or Parkinson’s disease. The new tissue will be a genetically the same as the patient, so there is no chance that the patient’s body will reject it. Even though there are several reasons why more research should be done with therapeutic cloning, there are also some ethical drawbacks. First of all, some people feel that it is unethical to take the eggs to use for research. Although the eggs are not fertilized, they still posses the ability to harbor life, and that makes some people feel uneasy about the entire procedure. Another issue facing more research is how to get the eggs themselves. Kevin Eggan, a biologist at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, said that although $100,000 has been spent on ads for women to donate eggs, not a single egg has been donated. There are two reasons for this. First, the procedure to obtain theeggs is uncomfortable, and somewhat painful. The procedure is also dangerous and can harbor some health risks. The second reason is that in Massachusetts (where the $100,000 in ads was spent) there is a law that states that a woman can not be paid for her eggs. This is so that poor women don’t feel obligated to do this out of financial necessity. So the everyday women who would consider donating an egg do not see the benefit to putting her life in danger when she would not be compensated for it. Therapeutic Cloning can provide some great leaps in medical science; however, research is currently at a standstill because of ethical dilemmas. Human Tissue Engineering is the...
