“Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”
The movie, “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” starts off by announcing the death of Senator Sam Foley. Lots of phone calls are made and many people are worry about how to replace Sam. In order for the senator to be replaced the governor, from Western state Happy Hopper chooses the replacement, however; the governor and his group of supporter are worried about who will take Sams place because they wanted someone who was manipulative, someone that would say yes to everything and someone that they could control. The governor suggested many names to be senator and was also pressured by his corrupt political boss, Jim Taylor to choose his handpicked stooge while committees want a reformer Henry Hill but no one seemed to be happy. On top of all the pressure one night during dinner the governor’s kids recommend having Jefferson Smith, the head of the boys Ranger as senator. While confused with who to elect as senator, Taylor’s stooge or the reformer, Hopper flips a coin but it ended up landing on the edge next to some newspaper that talked about the accomplishments of Jefferson Smith. Governor Hopper decides to elect Jefferson thinking that it would please the people. Hopper thought with him being naïve he would be easy to manipulate. When people heard that Jefferson was the new senator many people are happy because he’s naïve and not corrupt and was also seen as a hero. Jefferson is considered Idealistic, one who is unrealistic, because he is determined to make a change and he wants to build the boys camp on the land that he owns, for example he states “I want the boys to be more involved in nature and they could pay the state back using nickels and dimes. However; Jim Taylor and Joseph Payne had a different perspective they expected Jefferson to finance a new dam that will appreciate their real estate holdings.
