My Perspective of Multicultural Psychology

Introduction

There have been so many different estimates as to how many different cultures exist in the world today. This is something I do not think we will ever have a definitive figure for. If you were to just walk down the street or even in a grocery store and pay attention to the many different people that are around you would definitely loose count of the different cultural backgrounds associated with those individuals. The country we live in prides itself as being a “melting pot”. Allowing everyone, no matter their cultural backgrounds, to live and function as everyone around them. The utopian idea of a world free from discrimination and prejudices is beautiful. The unfortunate fact is that we do not live in such a world. People are being discriminated against daily because they are culturally different. It is wonderful to live in a country that allows the level of freedom we have in the US but we have to be realistic with or ideas and know that these problems still exist. This paper will focus on the study of multicultural psychology and its importance in our society.
What Is Multicultural Psychology
According to the textbook, multicultural psychology is the study of the influences of multiple cultures in a single context on human behavior (Baronga & Hall, 2002).  It focuses on the cultural differences in thought processes and acceptable versus unacceptable behaviors.  Multicultural psychology includes the study of all aspects of human behavior as it occurs in settings where people of different cultural backgrounds
