Week 2, about my name

My Name
Tuong Vi is name of a flower and it is also my name. Friends prefer to call me “ Vi” instead of Tuong Vi. If you separate the two words “ Tuong” and “ Vi”, into just “ Vi”, my name has another meaning. It means small.
When I asked my mom why she named me Tuong Vi. She said that she loves the Tuong Vi flower. Although it is a small rose, it grows up easily wherever it is. You can see it in a garden or a hedge. Tuong Vi flowers always grow together and one branch has a lot of flowers. She hoped that I will be brave when faced with any challenges, pretty like those flowers.
Although I like my name meaning, I used to not like it too much. When I was in elementary school, I had a lot of oral tests. My teacher called names from letter A to Y in her list. I was always on the bottom of a name list because my name begins with the letter V. I had to be the last pupil getting a test. I had to stay late at class until my turn. When I was testing, my friends were playing outside. At that time I hated my name so I wanted to change another name.
Changing name just because of staying late at class sounds funny. It is one of memories about my name. When I was in the USA, many people recommended I change my name to an American name like Vivi or Vivian. I would not change my name. First of all, it is a short name so it is easy to remember, just Vi. When my friends see me and say, “Hi”, they often point their index and middle figures together to say, “Hi”. They said it looks like the letter V. It is the easy way to remember my name. Secondly, my name is named by my mom with all of her love for me. I am proud of my name.
