My Ultimate Birthday Surprise
I had gone to spend the week with my cousin, Brandon, and his wife, Jennie the summer of my sixteenth birthday. I had no idea that Brandon had the most thoughtful and extravagant birthday gift I could ever imagine. Brandon had, without his wife’s knowledge, set up an appointment for Jennie and me to go skydiving. I had always wondered if I would ever have the courage to jump out of an airplane at 13,000 feet in the air. Skydiving had always been a dream of mine. My dream was made a reality in the blistering summer of 2010.
My bags were packed and I was ready to spend the week with Brandon, who I have always thought of like a brother, and his wife, Jennie. It never occurred to me that Brandon had anything out of the ordinary planned for my birthday. I was mistaken. After Brandon picked me up from my house, he told me he had a special surprise waiting on me when we got back to his house. I was kind of skeptical because Brandon had never really gone out of his way to do anything for my birthday. When we got back to his house Jennie had dinner on the table and ready for us to sit down and eat. After we finished dinner and dessert, Brandon handed me a pink envelope with my name written sloppily on the front. I knew almost immediately Jennie had not had anything to do with this gift. I assumed it was just an ordinary birthday card from the local Walgreens with a small sum of cash. I ripped the envelope and one end and hastily pulled the card out. As I started reading the card, my eyes became broad and my heart started hammering with ecstasy.
I jumped out of my chair and ran over to Brandon to give him a hug. Jennie was in wonder. All at once, it became obvious to me why Brandon’s messy scribble had been on the front of that envelope instead of Jennie’s careful, cursive handwriting. This was a surprise for both of us.
