This essay is about the novel My Ántonia, written by Willa Cather. One of the novel’s main characters is Ántonia Shimerda. She is a beautiful, strong, and clever girl and should be proud of her personality.
The family Shimerda was one of the families emigrating from Czech lands to start a new life. They were immigrating to American country Nebraska. Ántonia was a daughter of this family. The narrator of this book is Jim Burden, who met Shimerdas family in the train to Nebraska. He is describing Ántonia as a beautiful and clever girl which should be proud of her personality.
When they met it was love at first sight but most what he loved about her was the eyes because he was much explaining, in the book, how nice they are. He also described everything what he loved about her. “I remembered what the conductor had said about her eyes. They were big and warm and full of light, like the sun shining on brown pools in the wood. Her skin was brown, too, and in her cheeks she had a glow of rich, dark colour. Her brown hair was curly and wild-looking” (I, III). This quote shows how he really was love with her and how beautiful she was to him.
Jim was also teaching her the English language. She was really clever and swift so she was learning really quickly. Because she liked his lessons and was learning quickly she wanted to give him some present so she decided to give him her silver ring. “After Antonia had said the new words over and over, she wanted to give me a little chased silver ring she wore on her middle finger” (I, III). But Jim refused that because he thought it is not fine to have something she had for her whole life. “I repulsed her quite sternly. I didn't want her ring, and I felt there was something reckless and extravagant about her wishing to give it away to a boy she had never seen before” (I, III).
