Cover Your Eyes Kids! It’s MySpace!

MySpace.com attracts thousands of new people every day with a user base over 100 million. Its growing popularity is redefining how we interact with people. MySpace keeps blogs, user information, videos and pictures for people to see locally and internationally. I have participated in these activities on a daily basis. I have noticed and pondered over MySpace and about the children who are logged onto it. On my account I have people that have contacted me that were as old as 70 and as young as 13. It bothers me that a stranger can have access to a teenager’s profile, blogs, personal information and even the addresses of their home or school they attend. I think of my cousins that are in high school and wonder if they talk with older people on MySpace. It makes me apprehensive to wonder about their safety from online dangers. MySpace should be an adult only site because child safety is threatened. Children are often times susceptible to online scams, online predators and cyber bullies.
Kids are unknowingly vulnerable to the latest types of online scams using MySpace. One particular scam using MySpace was reported by Mail Online. In this scam the perpetrator sends an email that is targeted to a younger MySpace user. The email promises a free Macy’s department store 500 dollar gift card to use. A picture of Macy’s department store lures the user even further by getting them to log onto MySpace to redeem their free gift card. Unfortunately, the MySpace page is false! Personal user information is sent to scammers to use in credit card scams (Firth). Another type of scam was stated by CBRonline.com. Scammers get critical information by hacking into the page of a young MySpace user by embedding computer code into audio and image files.
