Introduction:

The vibrant democracy of India has always been her strength. Ours is the only country where people from contrastingly different castes, creed, religion and race live together in peace and harmony (though not completely). The other hallmarks of our country are its strong three-tier system and a free press. The imposition of the Emergency in 1975 struck at the very core of these ideals, which constitute our democracy. Perhaps, it is referred as the darkest period since India’s Independence.
Following project entitled “The National Emergency, 1975” starts with a generalised definition, types and effects of emergency if happens in a country. Later we reach towards a brief introduction of India’s third PM Indira Gandhi and the political scenes of her government. Then we look at the Role of the President during emergency both in general and in context to what the then President of India, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed did. Next, comes The actual events of Emergency,its background and how its declaration changed the scenarios of Indian Politics at that time. Following its effects on common people, Indian Constitution and also Indian National Congress. Finally comes the response from people and other opposition parties and consequences of the Emergency.
