On the morning of February 20, 2007, I left Rhode Island to head back to school in Paxton, Massachusetts. The time was approximately 6:45 a.m. A snow storm had come in only a few days before. When I was getting ready to leave, a friend of mine from back at school called me and said to me, “Be careful, remember the weather up here is a lot worse than where you are.” Now, I remember her saying that to me, I just didn’t think much of it. I figured that I’ve driven in bad condition and that this was just another drive back up to school. While driving on route 495 and then onto route 290, it was not snowing and the road conditions were fairly good. When I approached my exit into Worcester it began snowing just a little bit. Continuing my drive into Paxton, I approached Worcester Airport, which was just before the Paxton line. Now the town of Paxton is the highest point in Worcester County, making it the highest point above sea level in Massachusetts. So you can imagine the weather conditions up there is like no other city or town in the state. When there is fog, it’s like a white bed sheet has been draped over your windshield and when there is snow, it comes down hard and fast. The snow only got worse as I was slowly approaching my school. My journey was coming to an end as I took a left onto Grove Street, being only seconds away from Anna Maria College. Grove Street is a very narrow and winding road. The entire road is lined with old pine and willow trees, beyond them is farm land. In the winter time the town chooses not to plow it, because they feel it is easier to drive on with the compacted snow that on pavement with sheets of ice. Only being about a hundred yards away from school I was tired and relieved to have made it back in one piece, or so I thought. With no time to react, my car slid on a thin patch of black ice, surrounded by compacted snow. My car began to spin like a toy top when a child puts all there might into it, seeing the top spiral on the floor....
