Frictional and structural unemployment are both considered to be natural unemployment, which means they exist in any dynamic economy even when the labor market clears such as the demand and the supply for the labor is in equilibrium. In the figure 1, which represents the equilibrium of aggregate demand and aggregate supply of labor, the aggregate supply slopes upward displaying more people have potential to enter the labor force. However, the aggregate demand curve slopes downward as employers are forced to pay higher real wages because they will rather substitute capital for labor, causing the structural unemployment. {draw:frame} However, we must note that there will be natural unemployment although the demand and supply for labor should meet at the real wage with full employment. (figure 2) {draw:frame} The line N represents the total labor force, where ASL represents job seekers willing to accept jobs at each wage rate. The gap between those two lines illustrates the unemploymentbut not willing to accept the given market wage. As the wage rates gets higher, it gives labors an incentive to increase the unemployed’ s willingness to accept jobs, resulting N gets close to ASL at the higher wage rate. The author claims the NEETs phenomenon is due to the strong family bonds in East Asian societies, which make people depend on their family; however, I believe that it is due to confusion in rapid market changes, which include technological advancement. With the technology increases, industry starts to require more skilled people who are able to control the machinery; however, before the rapid change in technology, East Asian societies believed that as people put efforts in schooling and get educations in general, they would be eligible in the market. Therefore, the sudden change in the requirement to be a labor in the market makes people feel insecure, which eventually leads them to have low-self-esteem and decide to be discouraged workers.
