Negative Effects of Alcohol

Introduction Many people in our society today do not realize the dangerous effects of alcohol and the detrimental effects it can have on our body. Alcohol is responsible for about seventy five thousand deaths a year and I believe that is a ridiculous number that we should be able to reduce. Alcohol affects the body in many negative ways; it can damage the nervous system, the brain, lungs, liver, bones, heart, and muscles. Also alcohol is responsible for leading to many different diseases that can be deadly to the body. Some of these diseases consist of breast cancer, liver cancer and also liver cirrhosis. One of the main mental disorders this drug is responsible for is depression which can be a very dangerous disorder to acquire. My purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the detrimental effects that alcohol has on the body, and show how alcohol abuse can lead to mental disorders. Research The most deadly type of alcohol induced liver disease is Alcoholic Cirrhosis. On average ten to twenty percent of heavy drinkers acquire this disease. Some of the effects of this disease consist of rapid scarring of the liver tissue, vomiting and constant pain throughout the abdomens (Rehm pg 21). The damage that Cirrhosis causes is not reversible but the person may be able to stabilize their condition if they stop drinking alcohol. A few of the ways that Cirrhosis can be very deadly is it can cause liver cancer, enlarged spleen, induce a coma, and kidney failure (Rehm pg 25). Some other important negative effects that alcohol has on the body is how it affects the bones. Some of these effects consist of decreased bone mass, and formation. Also the persons bones tend to become weaker if the person consumes alcohol on a regular basis (Dawson pg 163). This then results in increased fractures of bones throughout the body.
