Introduction In 1884 a German inventor called Paul Nipkow invented a very important machine which formed a huge part of today’s media. This machine is the television. Since then television has become an effective tools that has an influence on people no matter their age or level of education. It has been used politicly by governments and parties to support their ideologies. However, television has negative implications on not only on adults in terms of health and social aspects; but also affects children's social and physical development, and academic achievement.
Television and health problems Violent television shows and children. Television has negative implications on society; it has a huge role in framing the social values, it made people accept certain language and behaviour that were not accepted in the past. In addition it shapes children mentality if their viewing habits are not regulated, many physiological studies have shown that the amount of violence that television shows effects both children and adults. Most of the studies have been conducted on the Childhood period, but there is a study done by L. Rowell Huesmann & colleagues between 1977 and 1992, they have observed children at ages 6 to 10 who watched violent shows and how this affected their behaviours 15 years later. This study revealed that exposure to violence in early age leads to an aggressive behaviour for both males and females. Males who exposed to violence television shows when they were children tend to beat their wives, while females tend to throw things at their husbands.( lsa.umich.edu) Academic performance affected by television. According to department of psychology in Michigan University, it is a simple cause and effect relationship, children who watched too much violence on television; this will affect their behaviours in a negative way.
