Executive Summary
We will be designing a network for a new Law Firm. The Law Firm will have two offices in different locations. The first location is the where the lawyers will work and clients will be seen. This location has twenty-four employees and each employee will need their own computer equipment. The second location will be for accounting, human resources and payroll. This second location will need computer equipment and the ability to access the network server at the first location.
The law firm wishes to have all computers connected to a network server. The entire office will need to share a color laser printer, a scanner, client files, and a database. The law firm must have access to the internet for every computer there. The information kept by the law firm is private and therefore security is of utmost importance. Both locations must be secure internally and externally so the clients and employees will know their information is secure.
Along with security the offices must have a backup and disaster recovery plan. A good backup and recovery plan will keep the firm from losing vital information, thereby saving them money when a disaster occurs.
While the system that is being proposed will have the ability to grow with the company there are a few areas that are of concern. Since this is a new office the cabling can be hard wired into the walls during construction. The company has no way of knowing how many more employees they will have. Therefore wiring for additional computers can not be done. This will mean that future computer equipment may need to be wirelessly connected. Connecting computers wirelessly poses a bigger security risk that will need to be handled when the time comes. Also since this is a new law firm, upfront expenditures must be kept to a minimum.
