At the end of the day, some people are just getting started, and they’re called night owls. Night owls tend start their days backwards. They go to bed wide awake and wake up sleepy. Any night owl would agree that staying awake till 6 am is better than waking up at 6 am. They believe that the night is more alive and richly colored than the day. They find comfort, relaxation and soothing familiarity in the darkness; perhaps the only time they can be genuinely themselves without feeling judged. It has been said that nights are made for the poets, writers, lovers, painters, thinkers, and silent seekers. Whether it is true or not, being a night owl has various effects on the person that is being sleep deprived. Even though sleep hours are delayed, keeping up with a normal routine would be dreading. Being a night owl causes the person to lack an adequate amount of sleep which results in the reduction of healthy brain function, break down in relationships, and weight gain.

One effect of being a night owl and not getting enough sleep is the reduction of healthy brain function. Sleep plays a crucial role in cognitive thinking and learning. So, whenever a person lacks sleep these cognitive processes are hurt in many ways; his/her attention span, concentration, alertness, reasoning, and problem solving all become impaired. For example, some of the biggest disasters in recent history like the massive Exxon Valdez oil spill and the 1986 nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl are due to the reduction of healthy brain function because of sleep deprivation.

Another effect that results off of holding the title “night owl” is the break down in relationships. Psychologists from the University of California found out in a series of new studies that sleep deprivation diminishes feelings of gratefulness, making people less thankful for their partners.
