First Day Outline (Class Overview)
1. This is a self-paced, mastery-learning based class.
a. Self-paced
i. Some of you (students) have been out of school for 20+ years. Others just graduated. Your understanding is different, your learning styles are different, and the speed at which you grasp information is different.
ii. Each class consists of six modules. When you complete the required six. I (instructor) will give you the correct six to do before you leave today. You must write this down in the class summary sheet and on the contract you were given. DON’T LEAVE UNTIL YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO!
iii. In this class, you can complete 2-in-1 or even 3-in-1. Hundreds of students have done it (completed more than one).
iv. YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE IN THIS CLASS!! This is not a credit-bearing or college level class—it is DEVELOPMENTAL. You should be trying to get out of this class THIS semester.
v. YOUR GOAL (for those in 100 or 101) SHOULD NOT BE TO COMPLETE SIX MODULES. If you do finish 6, great! But keep working hard until you finish all 18! Most of you have 3 or 4 math classes to take.
b. Mastery Learning
vi. You must get 80% on each assignment before moving to the next assignment.
vii. In math, if you don’t know how to do something basic (like signed numbers), you will be LOST when you get to the harder Algebra stuff. So you need to know (master) each topic before you move on.
viii. There is no midterm or final, so once you finish a module, you are done with that topic (although the concept may come up in later modules!)
ix. If you don’t complete all of your modules, you pick up next semester after the last test you did complete.

2. All lessons are on video and there are people here to help you!
c. You can get MUCH more help than is typically available in a traditional class
d. You can watch lessons over and over if you miss...
