Research Summary and Ethical Considerations
Research Topic: Lay perspectives on hypertension and drug adherence: systematic review of
qualitative research
Introduction
Background of study:
The primary endeavor in the study has been to analyze and evaluate the degree of
knowledge on the part of patients regarding hypertension and intake of drugs related to the
treatment of hypertension. The purpose of the study has been to investigate whether views on
hypertension and the medicines related to its treatment differ internationally based on culture
or ethnic group and to evaluate whether the research could inform interventions to improve
adherence.
The research topic is very much relevant to nursing. Nursing staff has to deal with
diversity. Nurses have to interact, communicate, and look after the treatment regimes of
different patients belonging to different cultures and racial origin. They are often faced with
the challenge to get involved in the treatment regime of a single disease but offering different
modes of care to different individuals suffering from the same disease and the adoption of
these different methods is actually due to the racial and cultural differences existing among
the concerned patients. Hence, the study should be considered important and relevant for
nursing practices. Moreover, from the study nursing practitioners might learn how to
acknowledge patients’ experiences about symptoms even though there is no scientific ground
for proving the occurrence of such symptoms. But based on cultural values and valuing the
belief systems of the patients the nurses should inform that people with hypertension even
