Nutrition 1 Nutrition and Exercise Plan Dennis B. Gilmore Axia College SCI241 Nutrition 2 Identification of Health Concern Coronary Artery Disease, Coronary Heart Disease, and Ischemic Heart Disease are all names for the same disease. The disease is caused by atherosclerosis, which is a buildup of fatty deposits in the coronary arteries. Coronary arteries supply blood to the heart, and buildup of plaque, or atheroma, can decrease the amount of blood-flow to the heart. The blockage of arteries can cause chest pain, heart attack, or stroke, depending on the location and severity of the blockage (Bianco, 2008) My family has a history of heart disease, and men are more at risk than women for developing coronary artery disease. This puts me at a high risk of developing the disease in my lifetime. There are a few things that I can change in my daily habits in order to help prevent contracting heart disease and suffering a heart attack in the future. Goals to Help Avoid Heart Disease Many of the techniques for preventing heart disease go hand-in-hand. Reduced cholesterol and blood pressure help to prevent coronary artery disease, and these two things can be greatly influenced by diet and exercise. I have created four personal goals for lessening my Nutrition 3 Reduce blood cholesterol Soluble fiber helps to reduce LDLlevels, or bad cholesterol. It also helps to increase HDL (high density cholesterol) levels, or good cholesterol. Five to ten grams of soluble fiber a day helps to reduce LDL cholesterol by five percent. One bowl of oatmeal contains about three grams of soluble fiber (Tsang, 2006), and is a good, simple breakfast. Other soluble fiber rich foods include apples, kidney beans, pears, and barley. Fish is also a good food to include in my diet to fight high cholesterol. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish have been shown to lower LDL and raise HDL. Fish like salmon, trout, and Mahi are foods that I love and will also help to lower my blood cholesterol....
