What is the most critical nutritional issue facing our children at this time?
One of the biggest nutritional issues that we are facing today is a high number of children that are obese. In today's society there are many factors that have contributed to this condition. Fast way of living of today's families, stress, poor exercise or no exercise at all, television and lack of knowledge on how poor nutrition can effect children's health and growth have been a big contribution to increasing numbers of childrens obesity .Fast way of living is something that many families experience today. This way of living is a reason why many families make poor decisions when it comes about their and their childrens nutrition. Children learn by watching us in everything we say or do. Negative comments about certain food, microwavable foods and often dining out are not the best ways to promote and model good dietary habits. Often foods like this do not contain a good nutritional value and they are high in sugar, sodium and fat. For many families television and computers at times are the perfect babysitters after a long day at work. Many hours of watching TV or playing computer games is another reason why we have increasing numbers of children that are overweight. These types of media forms have increasing negative impact not only on physical development but also a negative influence on childrens emotional and social development.It is not possible for families to completely discontinue childrens access to television and other media but it is possible to limit childrens access to television and find other ways to engage them in more activities such as reading, playing together etc.. Obesity is easier to prevent than to treat. If we make small changes in our childrens lives now it will have positive outcome in their adulthood.
