Obesity is one of the leading preventable cause of death throughout United States. It’s growing larger in children and has reached in New York City (NYC) like epidemic, where one in every three children are obese or overweight. Due to the rising prevalence of childhood obesity and its immediate and long-term adverse health effects, it’s being recognized as serious public health concern. In NYC, childhood obesity is a major social problem and an interventions is needed to fight this epidemic targeting culturally specific very young children with parent’s involvement. Failing to win the battle against childhood obesity will mean premature death and disability for an increasingly large segment of New Yorkers. Without strong action to reverse this epidemic, for the first time in history children may face a shorter lifespan than their parents.
Childhood obesity has become common today, particularly among low income, minorities and urban children. In New York City, childhood obesity is one of the most important social problem and serious public health issue. In his recent work on childhood obesity in NYC researcher Chen states, “Among urban children, more than half were overweight or obese by age of 5” (545). Their research acknowledge the prevalence of overweight and obesity among one to five years old low income, minority boys and girls seen at a large. Researcher Frieden agrees in his study when he write, “overall, 43% of public elementary school children in New York City were overweight” (1497). The essence of their argument is that obesity among public elementary school children in NYC is an important public health issue. In another research Chiasson reaffirm the fact that, “A full 40% of these children were overweight or at risk of overweight” (459).
