Observation of a 13 Week Old Child

Observation of L.M. on Sunday June 25, 2006.
Observation began at 9am.
Child woke at 7:30am and ate 4 ounces at 7:45am

Lexi is a 13 week old female child. She was born on March 26, 2006. She is an only child. Lexi has daily interaction with other children at daycare on Monday through Friday. Mom has indicated that the child is sleeping through the night (approximately 9pm-7am). She eats approximately 4 ounces every 2-3 hours.
Upon my arrival Lexi was sitting in the swing while mom got a bottle ready. Lexi was being fussy and whining a little, not a full cry. Mom finished making Lexi’s bottle and took her out of the swing and sat down with Lexi to feed her. Mom explained that Lexi enjoys laying on mom’s lap to be fed. Lexi immediately- began sucking on the bottle that was offered to her. She layed on mom’s lap and watched what mom was doing. When mom talked and gestured Lexi would follow her face and hands with her eyes. For a few minutes mom and Lexi sat and looked at each other. Mom talked to Lexi about what they were going to do after she finished eating. After mom would talk to Lexi , Lxi would stop sucking on the bottle and smile up at mom. Lexi kept moving her own hands to grasp mom or the bottle. She is not holding the bottle by herself yet but will put her hands up like she is trying to. After eating, mom puts Lexi on her shoulder to burp her. It took about 3 minutes of patting Lexi before she burped.
Mom then placed Lexi on a blanket on the floor for play time. Mom lays down on the floor with Lexi. Lexi lays on her back and looks up at mom. She then discovers the mirror that mom placed next to her head. She looks at the baby in the mirror and smiles. This is a skill that mom still gets very excited about and encourages. Lexi smiles at the baby in the mirror and then begins to laugh. She looks to mom for encouragement and then back at the baby and continues laughing.
