Of Race Class and Gendar

What racial issues exist at present besides racism against African Americans? Apparently, there are several that I did not clearly see until recently. Racism against Asians! I have many friends from Philippines, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and India. But I have never asked myself this question, What racial issues affect Asians? According to statistical data, Asians constitute roughly 5% of the US population. But unlike Hispanics, I observe that their group is not dominated by one single country of origin or at least in Chicago and suburban areas. For most, their education attainment is remarkable. I often hear or see of their performances at school; what is being projected is them outperforming the American population itself. This educational success has helped them achieve many goals in their lives, moreover make a difference make a difference in their community. However, I notice that racial discrimination is very powerful amongst the Asian community as well. Many of my friends, now and then tell me of how it is often difficult to live as an Asian, being the “other” individual.

Ever since I came to America or maybe even before coming, one way or another I have felt that I would be discriminated in a way. Based on what I see on television and hear from people, of course. Truth be told, I still do feel that I’m the “other” individual who although will become a naturalized citizen, an American so to speak would be noticed differently. During my two years of high school at Senn, I did not however, feel this way. It was only after I came to Parker that I sense the existence of discrimination. Senn High, was a community where almost everyone fit within the same social ranking, to be precise majority of them were like me; black and receiving public aid and food stamp. Now, what can an individual at Parker derive out of this? Simply, I’m right away with no further questions discriminated because of the fact that I’m an immigrant with low income.
