Why is there a plethora of obese children in this world we live in? what is obesity? Obesity is when the body has too much fat. 8.4% of two to five year olds were obese. 17.7% of six to eleven year olds and 20.5% of twelve to nineteen year olds were obese. Obesity has more than quadrupled in the past 30 years. One third of the children in 2012 were obese. Being overweight puts young little kiddos at serious health risks. Mostly cardiovascular other risks are bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes and social and psychological problems such as poor self-esteem. Some remedies are regular exercise, and healthy eating. In the world today unhealthy food is so easy to come by with fast food chains, vending machines, and unhealthy concessions. Technology is also a factor. Kids spend all their time inside on their phones, or tablets leading to childhood obesity. The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) recommends a maximum of one to two hours of “screen” time a day. Including television, phones/iPods computers. Studies show that the average teenager has about seven hours of screen time a day. I read that there are three factors to obesity. “Parents aiding in unhealthy eating habits.” “Second what schools are feeding kids.” Lastly” how much physical activity.” I know for a fact that kids eat what their parents eat because kids hardly cook. I know I eat what my mom make because I am too tired to make my own food. The difference is that I get regular exercise, and eat healthy for the most part. In a classic bowl of cereal of captain crunch in a third of a cup there is 12 grams of sugar, and 1.4 grams of fat, and let’s be real who actually eats the suggested serving size? Yeah no one.
