Operations Management has evolved from 18th Century until till date, the core functioning of OM has not changed but the process have been redefined to meet today’s demand of being innovative, fast changing, quick responding and global in nature.
OM once considered as backwater of management activities as more of necessity, has changed the perception of the managers, it has become the central core function of every company, industry giants like Jet Airways, Starbucks, Toyota ,IBM, FedEx etc. are achieving international successes due to their strong operations management.
According to Slack, Chambers & Johnston (2010), the goal of any organization whether public, private, service, industrial or retail operations is to make most effective use of its operations while ensuring that its customers are satisfied with the quality, cost, availability and even quantity of services or goods. The means to achieving this are to efficiently produce goods and services through effective business processes, production functions and controls.
IBM has over 100 years of experience in manufacturing and 15 years in consulting services. IBM’s innovation for technology has been unmatched, its manufacturing process has been replicated and used as benchmarks, its care for the employees (1990 – Dependent care, 25 million $). In recent years IBM has focused more on Services than manufacturing after selling most of its computer and servers manufacturing.
IBM have key executive positions of CEO, COO, CTO(CIO), CFO which are responsible for running 190 Billion $ company. As we see Chief operating officer has a key role in the organization, from top level management, in developing an operation strategy congruent with companies business and marketing strategies.
