I am going to talk about how can donating organs help save lives and share some stories about how the organ donation have helped people in life and how can organ donation be a form of consolation to one.
As my previous speakers have talked about how beneficial is the organ donation after brain-dead, i would like to elaborate more on how does it save people’s live.  A child can be born with an abnormal heart valve, which is a type of congenital heart defect, and this is the leading cause of death to infants under the age of 1 year old. They cannot take a mechanical valve because they cannot take the drugs needed to support it, fortunately through the organ donation system, if a matching donor is found, a life can be saved. With one brain-dead patient not only can you save one person’s life, you can save to a maximum up to 8 people’s life.  There are over 105,000 people awaiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. Let me share with you a story. There was this typical 10 year old boy with an energetic spirit named Nic McIver. His family was shocked after knowing that he was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer named Ewing’s sarcoma.  He was going to have to go through aggressive chemotherapy to save his life, and an allograft, which is a donor bone, to save his arm. If a graft could not be found amputation would be the only other option. After his first 3 months of chemotherapy, a match was found and Nic McIver underwent the 6 and 1/2 hour limb salvation surgery at Shands Hospital, in Gainesville, where what was left of the tumor was removed, along with his radius, which was replaced with the allograft, a gift from a stranger that took his broken body and made it whole again. After some time, the family found out that the stranger was none other than a 14 year old girl who was pronounced brain-dead after a car accident named Isabelle Roberts. A girl who is under 14 years old has given a new start to Nic’s life even after she was brain dead.
