This Case Study focused on Trader Joe’s, a grocery chain that is well-known for their diverse food and drink options. Trader Joe’s is able to keep their retail costs down by buying food directly from the producer whenever possible. They are able to attract customers by cultivating a fun, exploratory environment where each employee and customer is welcomed and treated with respect.
Trader Joe’s success is rooted in their ability to obtain and keep quality employees who can maximize the customer’s buying experience. From the first stages of recruitment, Trader Joe’s searches for people with inner qualities and not just a great skill package. Employees are incentivized by higher than average pay, on the job training, and a great benefit package that includes medical, dental, vision, company-paid retirement, paid vacation, and an employee discount. On the job, employees are encouraged to taste the products so that they can interact and offer suggestions to customers. This high level of investment into their employees translates into high job satisfaction and job performance which leads to higher customer satisfaction.
A successful company doesn’t just happen overnight though. To become successful takes a lot of planning, organizing, leading, and then controlling to maintain an edge over competitors. Trader Joe’s started out with a plan to make shopping an experiential adventure because they knew that consumers are more likely to try new exotic tastes while traveling. They put this plan into action by narrowing down the amount of products they made available on the shelves and by identifying key ways to cut down costs such as minimizing the middle man.
