Innovation, design, and creativity are influential in giving an organization the competitive advantage it needs to be successful in their market or industry. Creativity is where an idea starts, innovation takes the idea is puts into motion, and design is taking that innovation and improving or manipulating it to better meet the company’s needs and stay current (Von Stamm, 2008). All three areas can affect the company’s corporate strategy, procedures, and the products and services that an organization has to offer to its customers. Two companies that will be discussed in this paper are United Parcel Service (UPS) representing the service industry and The Coca-Cola Company representing the manufacturing industry.
United Parcel Service (UPS) has become one of the world's largest package delivery company and a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistics services. Every day, they manage the flow of goods, funds, and information in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide (UPS, 2013). They are always trying to find ways to be innovative and incorporate innovative ideas in the strategy of the company. Hand-held computers and wireless links have been implemented to assist with the flow of technology, as well as a system that has saved the company over 100 million miles of driving time and over 14 million gallons of gas, as well as speeding deliveries (Agrawal, 2012). United Parcel Service annually spends millions of dollars to keep up with technology, providing a more efficient method for workers to deliver their packages. The hub for air deliveries is centrally located in Kentucky and is highly automated, using computers to do all of the sorting.
