Organizational development is a widely known topic that deals with change-management issues, such as guiding organizations and businesses towards a set goal, improving employee satisfaction and reducing stress within organizations. According to Colquitt, LePine & Wesson (2009) stress is defined “as psychological response to demands for which there is something at stake and coping with those demands taxes or exceeds a person’s capacity or resources” (p.142). Stress plays an important factor when it comes to employee satisfaction in their job because it may affect their performance. Colquitt, LePine and Wesson (2009) also stated that about 40 percent of U.S workers feel that their jobs are very or extremely stressful. This means that a little less than half of the employees in the US may not be satisfied with their jobs because of stress. According to Kohler and Munz (2006), stress affects the well being of employees and the overall effectiveness of the organization. If employees are stressed out, their motivation as well as job satisfaction might decrease, which may lead to poor performance and turnover. This paper examines a situation at the regional office of AlzoomNET, where the company’s employees experience stress regarding an upcoming merge with WebAlmost, LLP. The employees are paranoid that the new management that may be taking place will be harsh and unfair and that layoffs will take place after the merge. Even though the company, AlzoomNET, stated that it does not intend to lay off anybody, the employees can not seem to find peace and altered rumors about the upcoming change keep going around. The regional office manager of AlzoomNET, Tim, decided to decrease the stress and excite the employees regarding the change by hiring an IO psychologist to intervene and solve the problem.
