Our Black World: The Past, Present, & Future

There are so many of my black ancestors that inspire me. Nonetheless, Malcolm X is one of my many hero’s. In the essay Learning to Read, written by Malcolm X he talked about his experiences in prison and how he taught himself to read and write. Malcolm read many books by Elijah Muhammad. Muhammad’s teachings were about slavery and black history. Reading these books upset Malcolm X so bad that it made him want to speak and take part in the black movement and inform people about what he knew. Of all the things going on today with the black community, I feel as though we all should be informed about what’s really going on. Slavery and black history is such an important aspect of today, but many don’t even realize it. We go through so much as African Americans that it should be known across the world but there is a lack of knowledge and value of our history. The truth is in the past. Malcolm X holds a great legacy in our black world. Our past holds the answers to what’s going on right now in the present, and the future of blacks as we know it. I will use examples from the life of Malcolm X to explain my anger of what a horror story this world has been for African Americans.
Malcolm X grew up poor just like most blacks today. Malcolm was only six years old when his father died and him and his siblings ended up in foster homes. What sickens me is how history repeats itself. Children losing their parents, father’s especially to the hands of this world. Malcolm also dropped out of school at a young age. One day Malcolm went and told his teacher that he wanted to grow up and be a lawyer, but the teacher responded by saying “niggers can’t be lawyers”. Soon after Malcolm became a street hustler and pimp. He got caught and was sent to jail for robbery. This highly angered me, when a teacher could just crush a child’s dream and goal in life.
