An individual’s health and the treatment that they receive is determined by a wide variety of factors. There has been a growing body of evidence which suggests there are great inequalities in the distribution of health and access to health care in the UK. Researchers have documented inequalities in the distribution of health by social class, gender, ethnicity, geographic location and age in terms of illness, life expectancy, suicide rate and infant mortality rates. In this report I will specifically be focusing on the impact of gender and social class on an individual’s health and their access to health care.
The Black Report is very significant in that it brings light and emphasis to the vast and growing health inequalities which are prevalent in Britain. This report was first introduced in August 1980 and provides a very detailed analysis of the unequal distribution of ill health and death amongst Britain. Overall this report indicates these disparities have been increasing throughout the years since 1948 despite the establishment of the National Health Service of the same year. However, the black report does not attribute the causes of these health disparities to the failings in the NHS, but rather to the social inequalities which I mentioned earlier on. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7118327
