Depression in Teenagers
About thirty years ago depression was something that everyone knew occurred, but was not as prominent as it is now. Even when it became an everyday thing it was more likely for someone older to develop this. Now, though, we see many teenagers developing depression and I just keeps rising. Depression is a prolonged feeling of sadness that causes some to chose suicide, or even just withdraw from everyone they love. This mental illness could be linked to many different causes.
In today’s society there has been an alarming rate of teenagers, aged 13-19, developing depression. It could be because they are stressed about school, or they just had a break up, or even that their parents are getting divorced. These are all things that could cause a person to be down and would definitely be a reason for teenagers to be depressed, but here are other factors. According to authors Wang M. T. and Kenny S., “Children who experience harsh verbal discipline are more likely to exhibit symptoms of depression at age 14” (3). These authors are linking the harsh words of parents to the depressive traits of teenagers. I could see how this could affect a child in the way that these are the people they look up to. Their opinion means more to a child than the parents think and I believe they should take this into consideration before they speak.One day my brother and I got off the bus, as we normally would, and mom was crying. She would then have to explain to us that our father was arrested. They hid cameras in the trees, right down from where he was growing. He had grown confident that he wouldn’t get caught and he didn’t cover his face when he went out. They had finally caught him and we were now going to be in a worse spot than we were before. He wasn’t thinking about this, or what it would do to us, because it was what he wanted to do and what he thought would help us.
