Periodontal disease is a big issue in the dental world . Many people have discussed the issue of periodontal disease. Especially dentists who know that having a healthy mouth equals having a healthy body. Education of the public is key so that it can be treated or prevented. Many people may not be aware that preterm births, diabetes and halitosis are linked with periodontal disease.
Preterm birth, halitosis, and systemic diseases, which are associated with periodontal disease and systemic diseases, which are associated with periodontal disease, can be treated or prevented by addressing oral health. Women who are pregnant and have periodontal disease are more at risk of having preterm births but this can be avoided by treating the periodontal disease. In the 1990’s ,Collins hypothesized that oral infection such as periodontal disease, could affect fetal conditions. It has now proven that a pregnant woman with periodontal disease is seven times more likely to have a small or a preterm baby. (Bobetesis, 2006) Periodontal disease is a serious bacterial infection that destroys the attachment fibers and supporting bone that hold your teeth in place. After the attachment fibers are destroyed, gums separate from the teeth, which forms a space that fills with plaque and even more infection occurs. As the disease advances , these pockets deepen more, gum tissue and bone are loss and the teeth eventually become loose. (Bobetsis, 2006) periodontal disease can lead to an increase of prostaglandin, a hormone-like substance that may speed up labour. This is to be said to be the leading cause why periodontal disease affect an unborn fetus. (Periodontology, 2008) A report published in the Journal of Periodontology, discussed a experiment that was preformed with 366 pregnant women who has periodontal disease and the conclusion of the experiment was that there was an 84 percent reduction of premature births.
