The life of a typical high school student is characterized by time spent studying, attending class, and socializing with peers. Throughout my high school years I spent most of my time focusing on my social life, which included being a cheerleader, having a boyfriend, and the unending cycle of who is in and out of the so called in crowd. Although, I did learn the hard way in school the experiences are what molded me into the individual I am today.
First and foremost, I felt cheerleading was my ticket into the popular social group. I made it my freshman year and not to mention I made All American cheerleader and went to Hawaii that January for it! I was so excited not only because I worked so hard to earn that spot, but also I knew everyone would notice me because I was one of the Brahma cheerleaders down on the side line. In cheerleading I learned about the almighty pecking order of the upper classman girls. Although I may have earned my spot on the squad I had to earn their respect. This wasn’t easy considering that only one of the senior girls made All American. The under classmen had to do all the grunt work like rolling up the mats, unloading and carrying the equipment to and from the bus, and whatever else they could think up. I dreaded every moment of this, but I thought I can’t wait until it’s my turn to be the big dog. Little did I know of how things would change in my upper classman years.
When I finally made it to my senior year we were working on our third sponsor and second principal. Guess what no seniority and everyone would be equal. All I could think was you have got to be kidding me! Well our final Sponsor was by far the worst. She had it out for the entire Varsity Squad especially the seniors. We rolled more mats and set up more equipment than anyone else. Not to mention for punishment she made us run laps in pelting rain. Needless to say she didn’t last either and our mother’s made sure of that. We were already to quit our senior year...
