Group 1: Asian Americans

1) Describe your assumptions, beliefs, and perceptions about members of this group.
Most people from the Asian American culture seem to either be really smart. They are also mostly doctors, nail shop owners, or restaurant owners. I think that this group of individuals are very religious and have extremely different values and customs from my own race. They seem to come off as really friendly individuals, but it can be believed that they are speaking poorly of you when they are talking in their native tongue

2) When you think about working professionally with members of this group, are there traits, characteristics, or other issues about the group that you would be curious about, concerned about, or intimidated by? Why would understanding diversity issues be important to you as a human services worker?
I do not personally feel one way or another about having to work with them. I work in the healthcare field with members of the Asian American race daily. In my line of business you learn really quickly not make assumptions. The one that has been hardest for me to stop has been assuming that because they have a thick accent they are not really comprehending what I am saying. As far as understanding diversity, I am pretty open and this alleviates a lot of potential conflicts.

3) How could advanced knowledge of the group address concerns and assumptions?
