Personal Statement Example- Politics and International Relations

From the Ancient Greeks to modern day USA, politics has transformed and influenced the shape of society and encouraged change. Even as I write, people in Hong Kong are calling for true democracy in their semi totalitarian regime. Reading George Orwell’s novels, ‘Animal Farm’ and ‘1984’ first introduced me to the idea of how Politics can affect every aspect of an individual’s life. For example, look at Nazi Germany. What began as political ideology became a basis for a state that controlled almost every detail of a person’s day to day life. To quote Orwell, “In our age, there is no such thing as ‘keeping out of Politics’- all issues are political issues”. Politics is vital in a civilised world. I’m eager to delve into the depth of politics and gain a fuller understanding of UK and International Politics and the interdependent world we live in. My A level choices were picked on the basis that they would provide me with a solid foundation from which to further my understanding of Politics and International Relations. Ethics and Philosophy have allowed me to question the moral reasoning of almost everything, including the basis behind UK Laws. This led to some interesting classroom debates whilst covering the UK’s judicial system at AS Level which only benefitted me as I am now far more confident whilst expressing my views. Studying History also furthered my interest in Politics by showing me the effects that minor political changes can have on a governmental state. It is yet again this idea that Politics is a part of everything we do that makes me wish to study Politics to degree level.
My enthusiasm for Politics extends beyond the classroom. After studying UK Politics at AS Level, I’ve learnt that firsthand experience is vital to fully understand the way Politics affects us. Therefore, I’m currently undertaking work experience with my local MP, Charlie Elphicke and the local prospective MP, Sarah Smith. With Ms Smith, I am organising a “Use Your Vote” event that...
