The use of marijuana among teens
“From 1992 to 2001, the proportion of children and teenagers in treatment for marijuana dependence and abuse jumped 142 percent.”( National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse) It’s a known fact that young kids smoke marijuana. Marijuana is a gateway drug to many other drugs, such as cocaine, heroin and or crack. Many studies have shown that if a child is to use this drug before the age of fifteen they are likely to become addicted to marijuana and others. This drug has the power to change how you act as well as your personality. Marijuana use needs to be treated just like alcoholism; it needs to come to an end, and be illegal and punishable just as if you abuse cocaine or crack.. In today’s world, marijuana is a popular activity among young adults, and this activity is harmful for not just them, but also everyone around them. This epidemic needs to come to an end because teenagers are abusing this drug more and more everyday with any repercussions.
Many people believe there are no side effects for marijuana except the “munchies” which is an in crease in appetite. Many people who smoke marijuana can develop lung cancer from all of the smoke. Marijuana is most often smoked but can be eaten; when this is done there is a risk of overdosing. It is easy to overdose from eating the drug rather then smoking, because you can eat a large amount at once without knowing. Overdose symptoms from marijuana can include but are not limited to; hallucinations, delusions and a loss of self-identification. The side effects of marijuana can include physical problems like breathing difficulties and deteriorating physical abilities. Despite a popular belief, marijuana side effects speed up the heart, blood and breathing rate .Therefore, this speeds up the aging process just like methamphetamines.
