Pfizer Inc. is a research-based global biopharmaceutical company headquartered in New York, NY that is involved in the discovery, development, manufacturing, commercialization, and marketing of prescription drugs. It is the world’s largest pharmaceutical company by revenue, and is a sound investment for any portfolio.
The company operates through a comprehensive network of subsidiaries and affiliates throughout the world. Its operations are split between two distinct reportable business segments: biopharmaceutical and diversified segments. Through its biopharmaceutical segment, the company offers primary care, specialty care, and oncology consumer-focused products. This segment focuses on the development and manufacturing of medicines for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, urogenital diseases, central nervous system disorders, allergies, eye disease, endocrine disorders, and other diseases.
Some of Pfizer’s key products in its biopharmaceutical segment include Lipitor, a prescribed medicine used to treat elevated cholesterol levels in the bloodstream and Viagra, used for erectile dysfunction. In fiscal year 2012, this segment contributed $51 billion to total revenues.
The diversified segment consists of consumer healthcare products, which include a variety of over-the-counter medicines, dietary supplements and personal care items, and animal health products and services, which are used to treat and prevent diseases in livestock and pets.
