Revised Philosophy

As a young student, physical education had always been my favorite class in school. To me it was my one asylum from being stuck behind a desk the whole day, which was not an easy task having been diagnosed with ADHD. Being able to run around a vast space with my classmates and enjoy the various activities presented to us was always the highlight of my day. Even in my final years of required P.E. my appreciation of the class never waned. Because I have been an athlete practically my whole life, I scarcely viewed physical activity as a chore; and in my early elementary years it seemed to be a common mindset among my generation too. Unfortunately, as we advanced our education into middle school, and eventually high school, it seemed the majority of my generation left this mindset behind, only to replace it with a deep-seeded dislike of physical activity. As I neared the end of my time in high school, it seemed as if the only people in my generation who relished physical activity were those on a sports team, high school and club alike. I was never able to understand the reasoning behind this at the time, but it was disheartening to see my generation inevitably develop a habitual laziness.

It is apparent that the same negative attitude toward physical activity has become seeded in our nation’s foundation and is being assimilated by younger generations at extremely influential ages. Most of the blame for this emerging issue is generally thrown onto the advancement of technology and its prominence in the American household, which I deem well deserved to some extent. Looking deeper into the issue, however, I believe as nation we are using technology as a scapegoat so that we can ignore the underlying cause of this dilemma: physical education programs straying from the foundations they were built on.
