Planning is essential to the operation of any organization, without a plan a company isn’t likely to make it vary far. Planning allows for managers to think about the future of the company and where they would like to see it, it also allows for them to designate daily tasks that will help the company reach whatever goal they may have. That being said, many people have trouble adapting plans when problems arise and changes need to be made. Plans are wonderful at aiding in productivity and success but it needs to be understood that they are not concrete and you need to roll with the punches at all times, and adapt the plan as necessary.
The first stage of planning is for senior management and involves developing a mission and strategic goals. This is the most broad step of the planning process and in the case of most companies involves creating a mission statement that allows everyone, employees and consumers alike, to know what standards the company is holding itself to and what their goals are both for day-to-day operation and their lifetime goals as a company. The second stage of planning is putting the plan into terms that managers and employees can handle. This means taking apart the mission statement and creating tasks that will allow the company to live up to it’s mission, analyzing the competition, creating contingency plans for when things go wrong and aligning goals throughout all levels of the company. The third step in planning is creating the operational factors necessary to achieve the company’s goals. It is important for management to have measurement devices to determine if they are on track with accomplishing their goals, without this, no progress will be made. If you’re trying to build a more loyal customer base by expanding the number of brand credit cards then you need to track, very closely, the number of cards you have so you can determine if you are reaching your goals.
