Riordan Manufacturing Project Management Plan
According to Techopedia (2014), “a project plan is a formal document designed to guide the control and execution of a project”. It is also the “key to a successful project and it the most important document that needs to be created when starting any business project” (Techopedia, 2014). Initiating a project requires a series of steps and documents to keep track of the requirements of every project phase, it functionalities, schedules, and assigned budget. For the purpose of this paper, the discussion will focus on the Riordan Manufacturing, Inc. China plant relocation project and the important role of a complete plan to accomplish the project expectations.
Organizational Background
“Riordan Manufacturing, Inc. (Riordan) was founded by Dr. Riordan and, after several years in the market through research and expanding to manufacturing, has earned international recognition as a leader in the field of plastic injection molding with its pioneering plastic designs. Products include plastic beverage containers manufactured at its plant in Albany, Georgia, modified plastic parts produced at its plant in Pontiac, Michigan, and plastic fan parts manufactured at its facilities in Hangzhou, China. Research and development for the company is carried out at its corporate headquarters in San Jose, California.”
Project Scope Statement and Project Charter
Larson and Gray (2011) indicates that the “project scope is a definition of the end result or mission of your project – a product or service for your client/customer”. On the other hand, a project charter “refers to a document that authorizes the project manager to initiate and lead the project”. (Larson & Gray, 2011) It is imperative to emphasize that it is “issued by upper management and provides the project manager with written authority to use organizational resources for project activities”.
