The police are constituted body of persons empowered by the state to enforce law, protect property and limit civil disorder. (Wikipedia) .They are the people who keep the public safe. The police have various roles. One includes patrolling, where they go about in uniforms with their patrol cars. They respond to radio calls, help the injured and respond to theft cases which is usually time consuming. Another role of the police is investigation, usually done by detectives who have more flexible hours. Their role is to investigate crimes. Another role is the monitoring of motor vehicles to avoid accidents. With these roles officers are at times faced with threatening situations forcing them to act rapidly. Since they are given power to use force, they sometimes abuse this force leading to them being brutal to other citizens. Therefore police brutality is when a police uses unnecessary force against a citizen for no reason.
Most people are aware of the recent increase in these acts of police brutality, and that not all of the officers are found guilty of their crimes and end up repeating their offences. Targets are usually of individual class, race, and religion and of different sexual orient. Forms of police brutality include shooting; this is referred to as ‘deadly force’ and is only used as last resort. Another form is the use of teaser guns which sends out some sort of shock to restrain the offender. Also the use of batons in beating the offender. Another form is assault, either sexually or verbally is regarded as a form of police brutality.
