Police officers represent symbols for “justice” and “order” for the majority of people of this country because they are the ones who uphold the laws that make the United States of America so great. For those deciding to become police officers, will face many tests during the hiring process that measure whether or not they are suited for the career. From these tests, psychological testing is performed to evaluate an individual’s mental mindset and personality profile to determine if he/she possesses traits that fit the profile of a successful police officer (Discoverpolicing.org, 2014). This paper is here to make an argument that while socialization and experience on the job may influence an individual’s police personality it is his/her unique traits that mainly contribute to the formation of a successful police officer.
There are two types of personality platforms that are use in discussions to describe police personality: predisposition and occupational personalities. The predisposition platform focuses on the side of personality that is considered to be the “unique traits” that an individual developed since their early years of childhood before entering the police academy (Lorr, M., & Strack, S.,1994). Occupational personality, on the other hand, suggests that “socialization” and “experience” contribute to the creation of these personality traits and are developed throughout their police academy and policing years on the force (Sollund, R.,2008). From these perspectives, there is compelling evidence that either one can offer insight to police personality.
A person who has the authoritarianism trait may have a huge influence on people. Along with that, an individual with the authoritarianism trait may also have the ability to take charge in circumstances that call for a strong, self-confident, person to take over.
